UPDATE:
Megan was diagnosed at age 8 with Asperger’s syndrome, Dyspraxia and ADD. It was just this past year that she started wearing a hearing aid to help with her hearing loss. After several years of Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, Counseling and Hill School of Fort Worth, the right medications and a highly structured and routine home life Megan is thriving!
Megan has done very well through the remainder of her high school years going on to be named homecoming princess, becoming a member of the National Honor Society and a published poet, driving a car, having a job and dating. Megan has overcome many obstacles that children on the autism spectrum face. The perfect formula for success was the help of all of the right therapies, the right school and medication. Megan graduates high school in May 2016 and was accepted to Parker University to begin her schooling in Occupational Therapy. Megan is working at PediaPlex as a Behavior Therapist to help children on the autism spectrum while she is attending college.
PediaPlex is an all-inclusive diagnostic and therapeutic clinic offering psychology testing services, cognitive and academic assessments, speech therapy, occupational therapy, counseling, play therapy and ABA Therapy. PediaPlex’s mission is to help children and families affected by a variety of disorders including ADHD, autism, communication, sensory-motor, mental health and learning disabilities. PediaPlex achieves success through early screening, diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and support services offered by a multidisciplinary team of experienced professionals all in one convenient location.
As parents, we often wonder if our children will ever drive a car, go on a date, or be able to have a job and keep it. Megan has been able to maneuver all of these obstacles and accomplish her goals. Each of these goals took time. Driving took a year of hard work on her part and on the parent’s part (and lots of patience). Megan was fortunate to find a job with the right manager at Kincaid’s Hamburgers in Southlake who had a wonderful heart and took the time to care about her as an employee. Megan has met some wonderful young men who have taken her to prom, homecoming, and on dates to the movies and dinner. Many people do not question dates, social life or even driving a car. For Megan, these accomplishments were huge not only to her self-esteem, but to her overall perspective in life.
As parents, we can only hope that our children’s lives have some level of normalcy. At the end what is normal? It is only with the care from providers such as Dr. Taaka Cash with Privy Oasis that help make all of this success possible. We need to create that formula of success for each of our children and give them the self-esteem to be successful in their lives.
