Myth Buster: I can’t get PTSD from work
As I stated in my latest article, any high stress or dangerous environment can place workers at risk of developing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and this is not limited to the ‘obvious’ lines of work such as soldiers, firefighters, police officers, and EMTs. With almost 5 million Americans suffering from this disorder a year PTSD affects many men and women in our Nation’s workforce. Unfortunately, many of the symptoms are misinterpreted, often leading to the misdiagnosis of PTSD as depression, anxiety, adjustment disorder or borderline personality disorder.
Understanding the symptoms of PTSD is crucial in identifying the disorder. For more information on the symptoms and treatment, read this month’s article, Have You Been Misdiagnosed? Understanding the Signs and Symptoms of PTSD.
